Thursday Thoughts: Mamavation (Week 1)

Welcome to Thursday's Thoughts. This is my first week of being one of the official Mamavation Moms and I thought I would share with you a little about my week. As many of you know I found out last Thursday night that I was one of the two women who would enter the 7-week bootcamp ran by Leah (aka @bookieboo) to help me transition into a new lifestyle of health and fitness. Katie, @FrugalFemina, was the other mom chosen to take this journey with me. I'm thrilled to be working with her and look forward to us both becoming healthier. Neither of us could have done it without you!

So, the week has been more of an orientation due to the fact that a lot of our equipment and tools were not yet set in place. However, we have both been busy recording our daily food journals and weekly vlogs. Throughout the week we have been getting lots of packages in the mail of great products!

So far this is what I have received:

Here is what I am expecting next week:

I have also gotten a personal nutrition plan from Dr. Renna (@DrMary14). We talked for about two hours on the phone last night. I am a bit overwhelmed at the amount of food she gave me, but she assured me it was what my body would need to do this right. Here are two things I learned:

  1. Cinnamon is AWESOME and it even increases your metabolism!
  2. That 2 cups of lettuce only counts as 1 vegetable, not two.

I have also been working with Pete Cohen (@PeteCohen) from and on a 28-day challenge (follow the hashtag on twitter #petecohen) to become a thinner, healthier, and happier me. If you have never checked out his program, you should. He is witty, charming, and a blast to work with!

My FIT Friend, Erin from The Mom Buzz has been great this week. She has sent me emails and tweets and is always so supportive. She's currently working on a fitness site geared toward Figure Competition/Body Building called It is a work-in-progress, but still pretty interesting.

None of this would have even been possible if not for Leah (@bookieboo). I really appreciate her dedication and continued support. She is awesome.

Well, back to this week...
On Monday I will share with you where I am in my weight loss. I'm not sure if I will have updated measurements this week or next, but I'll share those as well once I have them. Do you think the scale moved? Even if it didn't move, I feel better, I look better, and my pants are leaving welts in my waist/belly area throughout the day.

I feel pretty good, maybe a bit tired from the sleep I lost last week. I'm very confident about my food choices this past week and my water intake. My fitness definitely is lacking, but I think this next week will be so much better once we have our fitness plan from Tracey Mallett.

What more could a woman ask for?

A special THANK YOU to the sponsors of Mamavation: Earth Footwear, EA Sports Active, Smooth Fitness, Gaiam, Muve (Gruve), Tracey Mallett, Dr. Renna, and Pete Cohen.

Team Refrigerator! I'm a Test Drive Mom for Frigidaire

Yep, you heard me right. I have the privilege of testing Frigidaire's Professional Series Refrigerator! Isn't it gorgeous?
It was delivered on Friday and I've been so busy with it that I forgot to tell you about it. Okay, my embarrassing know you are redneck when your old refrigerator door shelves are held in place with duct tape. Yep, my old fridge had duct tape holding it together. Sad, isn't it?
With that being said, this fridge and I are going to be great friends. I want to share my experience with you so I'll be sure to vlog and post about it a couple times a month. Check back to hear how it is going in a couple weeks...

Here is an interesting fact: Since 2009 Frigidaire has introduced 250 new appliances into the market with Moms in mind. They stand behind their claim that moms will save a minimum of eight hours (oh what I could do with 8 hrs) a month or their money back. How is that for a "More Me-Time Guarantee?"

Right now Jennifer Garner has partnered with Frigidaire to give YOU a chance to Spin & Win in support of Save the Children. Log on to Make Time for Change and play Spin & Win for your chance to win a new Frigidaire Affinity washer/dryer. For every spin Frigidaire will donate $1 to Save the Children as part of their $250,000 commitment. So what are you waiting for? Click the link above! (If you win - can you do some laundry for me? I'm really behind!)

Disclosure: “I wrote this review while participating in a Test Drive Campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Frigidaire and received a Frigidaire Refrigerator to facilitate my review.”

Thank You: I am the Mamavation Mom!

Well, I'm one of the two new Mamavation Moms (check out Katie from Frugal Femina, the other mom)! I owe it to you! Thank you so much for voting and supporting me. I haven't posted until now because over the past week I totally neglected my house (and blog) to campaign for this...but now my work begins. My Earth Footwear shoes, EA Sports Active, Smooth Fitness treadmill, Gaiam DVDs, Tracy Mallet DVDs, Gruve, Sportline pedometer, Pete Cohen weightloss challenge, and nutrition plan from Dr. Renna are all on their way. In the meantime I am using the Bob Green Total Body Makeover DVD to get my workouts.

I will be posting a Mamavation Post each Thursday on my blog and on Mamavation. I hope you will check them out and support my journey. I will not be doing Mamavation Mondays going forward, but will do my best to visit as many of my Sista's posts as possible.

A special thank you to my mom, Aunt Lorrie and her family, my sister and brother, my friend Debbie and all her friends, the crew at Mom Dot, Erin from The Mom Buzz, and Toni from Delightful Chaos.

Now my work begins!

Mamavation Monday: Bringing Families Together

Hey ladies (and men if you are reading this)! We are starting a new week and there only a couple days left to vote for the next Mamavation Mom! I hope you are all voting every day. You can vote for more than one of us - support is so important for the Mamavation Family. I'd like to say congratulations to the other women (other than myself) that made the finals: @MommyBrain, @FrugalFemina, @iamsucceeding, and @TrulyTrayce. The votes are pretty close according to @bookieboo...that's a good thing! I truly appreciate all of you who are voting for me - it warms my heart! I also want to say that I hope the women who didn't make the finals continue with the Sistahood - we need you and we want to continue to support you!

The next Mamavation Moms will be announced at the twitter party on January, 21st. I hope you have registered for some of the prizes - there will be something given away every 6 minutes! I'm hoping to score something because the prizes are awesome! RSVP here...

Okay, about my week:
I'm not sure how to measure exactly. I need to look into it, but tonight we did our own version of where to measure. Ready? Hips: 47 3/4 inches; Waist: 45 1/2 inches; Arms: 15 1/2 inches; and Upper Thigh: 26 1/2 inches. That sure is a lot of inches. I'm actually larger around my hips than my 5 yo is!

I bought a scale, but I will not be a slave to the scale. It will come out on Sunday mornings and that is the ONLY time! My original weigh-in weight was 230 lbs. and after cutting out soda, sugar, and all diet beverages as well as drinking 64+ oz. of water a day I have dropped 13 lbs in 15 days. Granted I have been more active and I've been monitoring my food intake, but I think the majority of that is the cutting of soda and the imbibing of water. I know I should not expect that kind of weight loss going forward. I would be comfortable with 2 - 3 lbs. Seriously, I don't really notice any difference, but I'm not letting that discourage me. It isn't only about weight loss - it is about being healthy.

Oh, my hubby has been great this week supporting my lifestyle change. He bought me a couple cute workout outfits and the cutest water bottle (see pic). Here are some of my healthy food choices this week:

HINT is a great choice for weight loss because it has NO sugar and NO calories!
Look for my review later this week and I'm giving away a case of multiple flavors to one lucky winner!

Fitness! Yes, I did better this week, but by no means did I do good. I have met my goal of walking at work, but I just don't think it is enough. I'm not sure why I'm having a problem with working out either?!?! I'm totally committed to this, but still can't fit the time in my schedule to workout for an hour. I talked to my husband about it today and we decided that if I do not become the next Mamavation Mom we are buying a treadmill on January 22nd. Our health has to be a priority and if we have to sell the kids to get it, we will (I'm so kidding there ). He also agreed to give up the television every night for one hour to let me Wii. That folks, is a HUGE commitment for him. He wants to use that hour to work out and it forces him off the couch too.

Immediate Goal:
I will maintain my awesome water drinking. I WILL move this week. I will, I will, I will! I have to. I will do at least 30 minutes of elevated heart rate cardio 5 days this week! Do you hear that lazy body? I win, you lose! You will obey! I will make you! I don't care if you are tired. I don't care if the dishes are dirty. I don't care if you have to fold laundry. I DO NOT CARE WHAT EXCUSES MY BRAIN COMES UP WITH - it can "Shut the dUCK up!" - Thanks Pete.

My FIT Friend:(Erin's 4-pack)
One requirement of being the Mamavation Mom is that you must have a FIT Friend - either IRL or virtual. My FIT Friend is Erin from The Mom Buzz. Since fitness is my weakness I couldn't have chosen a better person. I hope you will reach out to her as she is working toward a HUGE goal herself - she is working toward her very first bodybuilding competition!

Here is her story (as told by Erin):
"I was recently inspired when I saw my husband compete in a bodybuilding contest. I saw the sweat and determination he had to lose weight and get in fine, competitive shape. It was awesome. Plus, seeing the women who had competed and transformed their bodies was just amazing. There are so many options for women, too, between bodybuilding, figure, fitness and bikini. I decided that I was going to compete in Figure, the best place for my build and lack of gymnastic talent. And since July 2009 I've gained 8 pounds of muscle ... and a 4 pack! I am so proud of what I was able to accomplish and I hope that it motivates other women into believing in themselves too! I know it's not easy at first, with a new diet and making exercise routine. But it does get easier over time and the results make it all worth it!

So, in short, I should be appearing on stage in September 2010 in a very teeny bikini and high heels. And I am always willing to help anyone who wants to make a difference in their own lifestyle and physique, because it really is possible!"

Special Thanks:

Thank you, Toni, from Delightful Chaos who is giving away a $25 GC (either Starbucks or Save A Lot) for entry, vote @LisaSamples. I also want to thank Shasta at Faithfully Frugal and Free and @SusieQTPies from Scraps of Life for devoting an entire blog post in support of me! I'm continuously amazed at the support from everyone and all the men and women at Mom Dot and twitter that are behind me...simply speechless again. I hope you will visit their sites and tell them how much they rock! Also, a special thanks goes out to Aunt Lorrie and her family - wow! I was especially touched that my brother Michael (we haven't seen/talked to each other in over 24 years) left me a FB message letting me know he has been voting daily! Mamavation brings families together!

Remember - in order for me to be the next Mamavation Mom you have to vote daily on Mamavation's site (right hand sidebar)! Also, tweets are appreciated and join us Monday night on MomTV for Mamavation and win prizes, more info? Check it out.

Squeeballs Party for Wii Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

Congratulations comment 136 - Lisa won the Squeeballs!

I got to try the Squeeballs for Wii this holiday season and it wasn't what I expected. My family actually put off playing it for about two weeks - it just looked too cutesy. So, one night we were sitting around and decided to throw it in and try it out and my husband and 16 year old played until 2 am. There is cartoon violence, so I wouldn't suggest it for very young kids.

Anyway, there are all these things you have to do - such as cook, shoot targets, and other 148 other nifty things. The cute little characters are manipulated to accomplish each task. Although it is a little disturbing to see these cute little character toppled over with a bowling ball or boiled to make a recipe, it is really quite fun.

You can follow @Squeeballs on twitter and the company @PDPgaming. Squeeballs sells for $19.99 and you can find it on Amazon (affiliate link) - Squeeballs Party.

Check out the video of Squeeballs:

chicBuds Sport Headphones Review: Candy for your Ears

I've been hearing a lot of women complaining that their earbuds keep popping out of their ears and that if they do get them to stay in they irritate their ears. I have the same problem. I cannot use normal earbuds for too long. They make some others that are adjustable, but those are also uncomfortable. I don't think the sound quality is that great either. I can still hear my kids playing in the background, my husband's television, and the music at the gym.

TREAT YOUR EARS TO chicBuds Sport Headphones! I started really wearing these once I joined the #Mamavation campaign to work out with and I LOVE THEM! Seriously, the sound quality is awesome and they are so stylish. They aren't big and bulky either because they fold up fold up for easy carrying, travel and storage. The adjustable headband makes for a comfortable fit on both my 5 year old and myself.

One of the best things is that they are completely compatible with an iPhone, iPod, CD player, MP3 player, DVD player, airplane connector!

Some geeky information:
* Driver unit: 44mm diameter dome
* Impedance: 32 ohms
* Sensitivity: 108dBĂ‚±3dB at 1kHz 3000
* Frequency response: 5Hz to 20KHz
* Plug: 3.5mm stereo plug
* Cord length: 1.5m

You can find them at ChicBuds website and they come in multi-color or hot pink. I have the multi-color ones and I'm thinking about getting the pink ones because that's my favorite color. The retail value is $29.99.

Disclosure: I got the headphones free with no obligation to do the review. I LOVE these and therefore I choose to write this...

On The Eve of Mamavation Top 5 Announcement

Tomorrow morning 20 women will find out who will move on to stage 2, voting, of the mamavation campaign. Fifteen women will not be on the panel eligible to solicit votes. I prefer not to think about it as the "Top" 5, but as the chosen 5 women who need us. If nothing else, we all (in my eyes) are the Top! We all win.

Granted we may not walk away with two pairs of Earth Footwear--, an EA SPORTS Active, an EA SPORTS Active More Workouts, a Treadmill 6.5 from Smooth Fitness, a Sexy in 6 book by Tracey Mallett, the Growing Up Healthy The Next Generation Way, Dr. Renna's book & workout DVD for children, theTotal Body Fat Burner or Total Body Calorie Blast, DVD by Tracey Mallett, the Gaiam, Tae Bo Amped and Tae Bo T3 series, aGruve, a HydraCoach or pedometer from Sportsline (awesome sponsors) - but we will all walk away with supportive new friends that are making healthy lifestyle changes for all the right reasons.

I want you all to know you have changed my life forever and regardless of whose names are on the list tomorrow - I am here for each and everyone one of you. Thank you for all your support over the last 2 weeks. I cannot imagine making this journey without you.

Here are the women I believe should be on the list:

(Hope I did not forget anyone - pulled list yesterday from site.)
Can you imagine being @bookieboo right now? I can't. It hurts my heart that she has to be the one to say who continues. I know tomorrow, no matter what, she will be hurting. Let's pull together for her and let her know that we value her decision and we support her as well.

Ladies - regardless if I am a part of the chosen 5 I will be by your side every step of the way. I won't desert you. I won't be envious. I won't gossip about who should or shouldn't have been picked. I won't question Leah's choices. I will, however, be drinking my water, practicing portion control, and working on my fitness. I hope you will join me.

Thank you ladies, for being so awesome!

PS I have not forgotten my Sistas who did not apply for the Mamavation Mom slots - you are amazing and I hope I can accomplish half of what you have all done.

For those new to my blog or not following the campaign, please check out Mamavation on the web. Would love to have you as a Sista too!

Wordless Wednesday: Better than Sex

Yep, that's right!

My Mamavation Monday Post: I Made Some Changes

I was accepted into the Mamavation Sistahood and this week there are a lot of new girls pledging. I'm so excited about it too - welcoming more people means more support on our journey of a healthy lifestyle change.

As promised, I did weigh myself last week. I was pretty close - I weighed in at 228. I have not weighed myself this week. I thought I would save that for next weeks post. I don't want to be a slave to a scale.

My Healthy Food Choice This Week

Successes: I am drinking at least 64 oz. of water a day and haven't had a soda or sugar drink since January 2nd. I am so proud of myself. I can feel a difference that water is making already. I also went to the gym this week and started walking on the treadmill (my most favorite form of exercise).

I have also been very good about food intake. I even posted a few things throughout the week on twitter and on my blog about my diet. I am hoping to get a library together of healthy recipes that we can all share via link love. If you have one, please share it with everyone here.

As some of you know I do a lot of reviews on my site and I've changed gears a bit. I have started incorporating healthy food and fitness related items into my reviews. I haven't posted the reviews and/or giveaways yet because I haven't gotten most of the new products. I have a meeting on Tuesday with a local gym to see if they would be interested in trading advertising and/or a review for membership. Money is tight here, so I'm trying to use alternative methods for things I cannot afford (such as gym memberships).

Challenges: Although I have done great at drinking water, my body just is not used to having fluids in it. My bladder is particularly confused and keeps letting out tiny piddles without my permission. I need to remember to empty my bladder more frequently because this sucks! I'm also thinking about consulting with my doctor to make sure this is normal. In no way am I about to stop drinking my water!

I didn't get around to going to the gym until Saturday. I know, that sucks. I could tell you about the freezing cold weather and the kids being home due to the Atlanta snow "storm", but I don't want to make up excuses for my laziness (although I just did that). I will conquer this!

Immediate goal:
10 - 15 minutes of brisk walking during lunch this week.
Going to the gym at least 5 times this week.

Special Thanks:
Toni from Delightful Chaos who is giving away a $25 GC (either Starbucks, Save A Lot, or BJs Wholesale) and Erin from The Mom Buzz who is giving free entries into her giveaways in return for supporting me through this journey. I'm speechless that these women have done this for me...simply speechless. I hope you will visit their sites and tell them how much they rock!

Remember - in order for me to be the next Mamavation Mom you have to let @BookieBoo know you support me! Please tweet: "Hey @bookieboo! I want @lisasamples to be the next #Mamavation Mom. She has my support!"

I want to give a special shout out for all the other moms trying out for #mamavation mom this time around - you all deserve it! Join us at Mamavation on MomTV! tomorrow night!

10 Ways to Get Fit After the Holidays

Twittermoms and EA Sports Active want to know what 10 things I'm doing to get fit after the holidays. They will pick 5 random posts from around the web and award them a copy of EA SPORTS Active™ Personal Trainer. So, without further ado, here is my Top 10:

1. I WILL NOT DIET!!! Diet's are an excuse to fail. I will, however, make a lifestyle change.
2. I will move! Yes, that means I will make a conscious effort to walk further and more regularly.
3. I will apply to be the #Mamavation Mom (vote for me please).
4. I will monitor my food intake.
5. I will eat no more than 3 oz. of meat at a meal and I will cut back on red meat.
6. I will eat more veggies.
7. I will drink at least 64 oz. of water a day.
8. I will surround myself with positive people and role models (such as Erin from The Mom Buzz) and encourage others to do the same.
9. I will purchase (if I do not win it) EA Sports Active and take their 30-day challenge as a Valentines Day gift to myself!
10. I will not quit!

I hope you will join me on my journey over the next 2 months as I begin to embark on a healthy lifestyle.

Mamavation Monday: Water, water, water...

I decided to do a post every week on Monday as part of my pledge to the Mamavation Sistahood and as my goal to live a healthy lifestyle. Many of you might not know me, therefore I want to share the ABCs of Me post with you to read if you are interested.

Successes: Since this is my first post I want to let you know that I am also trying out to become the next Mamavation Mom. You can read that post here: New Year, New Me: Mamavation Application. This was a HUGE challenge for me (no pun intended) because I HATE seeing myself on camera. As part of that application I really need your support on twitter.

Please tweet: "Hey @bookieboo! I want @lisasamples to be the next #Mamavation Mom. She has my support!"

I went shopping on Sunday and bought tons of fresh veggies and fruit. I also went and had the butcher cut all my meat and fish into 3 oz. portions to ensure I eat the right amount of protein. Additionally, I got a digital kitchen scale for measuring accuracy.

I wanted to do a weigh in, but my scale is not working so that will have to be next week. I believe I am about 230 lbs. right now. I'm currently wearing a size 18.
I will post my "before" pictures next week as well (God, help me).

Challenges: My goal for this week is to watch portion sizes, drink water, and to contact the gym down the street to see how much membership is for a month. The only thing I like is the treadmill, so I'm hoping to just buy one next month. I need to exercise, therefore I will be reasonable and set small goals or I will definitely burn myself out. Working FT outside the home is my biggest challenge.

Immediate goal:
10 - 15 minutes of brisk walking during lunch this week.
Measure my servings.
Drink 64 oz. of water a day (right now I'm at 0).
The support I have received since putting in my application yesterday has been amazing. I have never felt so cared about in my entire life. I appreciate all you have done. I am especially appreciative of Toni from Delightful Chaos who is giving away a $25 GC (either Starbucks, Save A Lot, or BJs Wholesale) and Erin from The Mom Buzz who is giving free entries into her giveaways in return for supporting me through this journey. I'm speechless that these women have done this for me...simply speechless. I hope you will visit their sites and tell them how much they rock!

Remember - in order for me to be the next Mamavation Mom you have to let @BookieBoo know you support me! Let me know you were here and I will come support you as well.

Oh, if you have any recipes you can share that are healthy - please do!

Winners...Sheer Cover Minerals & Cheryl & Co. Brownies

Winner of the Sheer Cover Minerals was Traci Fritz!

The Cheryl & Company brownies go to...
Beeb - Congrats!

If I do not hear back by Tuesday I will redraw winners.

In the mean time - please tweet:

"Hey @bookieboo! I want @lisasamples to be the next #Mamavation Mom. She has my support!"

I want to be the next mamavation mom!
